The pageant, the first edition of which was in 1957, was initially celebrated every two years (1957, 1959, 1961, 1963) under the name of Reinado Continental del Café.
The pageant has always been held in Manizales, Colombia, in January during the Feria de Manizales, and is organized by Instituto de Cultura y Turismo de Manizales annually.
To gain participation in Reina Internacional del Café, a coffee producing country needs a local company or person to buy the local rights of the competition through a franchise fee. The fee includes the rights of image, brand and everything related to the pageant.
Usually a country’s candidate selection involves pageants in the nation’s local subdivisions, where local winners compete in a national pageant, but there are some countries who opt for an internal selection.
